‘Alleged militant has recruited 50 men for ULFA’

Staff Reporter

Was sent by Hira Sarania, the commander of a battalion

NEW DELHI: The alleged United Liberation Front of Asom militant arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police over the weekend for attempting to extort Rs.25 lakh from a Member of Parliament has so far recruited over 50 young men for the outfit.

According to the police, Romen Baruah (51) has been with ULFA since 1985 and was recently assigned the task of extorting protection money from politicians. He was allegedly asked to extort money from Anwar Hussain, an MP from Dhubri in Assam, when he was arrested in Delhi. He had been sent by Hira Sarania, the commander of the 709 Battalion of the outfit.

The police claim to have seized from him letters signed by Hira and the deputy commandant-in-chief of the outfit, Raju Baruah.

DCP (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said the accused was initiated into militancy by ULFA militants Pradeep Bhatta and Romen Duara. One of the letters seized from Romen claimed that the outfit was having unofficial talks with the Centre and that it required money for visits to Kolkata to attend the meetings in that regard.
