Voicing protest: A Secretariat march organised on Monday as part of the strike called by service organisations in protest against the death of headmaster James Augustine in Malappuram on Saturday. – Thiruvananthapuram: School teachers and government employees owing allegiance to Left unions struck work on Monday in protest against the death of a headmaster in Malappuram on Saturday during an altercation with youth activists protesting against the controversial school textbook. The striking teachers and employees took out a rally to the Secretariat and staged a protest meeting. The protest was organised by the Federation of State Employees and Teachers Organisations (FSETO). Action council general convener K. Rajendran, who inaugurated the meeting, said the cruel murder of the teacher would remain a slur on Kerala society. Addressing the meeting, leaders of various organisations alleged that the UDF- sponsored stir was aimed at aiding the forces trying to commercialise the education sector. Employees owing allegiance to the Confederation of Central Government Employees, Kerala Cooperative Employees Union and NGO Association participated in the rally and protest meeting.
