PUDUCHERRY: A new block, being constructed at Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH and PGI), will provide additional wards for the Departments of Neurology and Nephrology, thereby expanding the existing facilities.

The construction of the building began one-and-a-half years ago. The total area was over 2,700 sq.m. and works were being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.79 crore, hospital authorities said.

“The block will accommodate additional wards, pharmacy stores, records room and library. The work will probably be completed by December,” an official said.

The building consists of four floors, which would house the neurology and nephrology units.

The ground floor would accommodate a pharmacy store, a canteen for inpatients and outpatients and a room for cylinders, the authorities said.

“The first floor will have a conference hall, hospital maintenance unit, linen store and nephrology ward, while the second floor will accommodate the neurology ward and intensive coronary care unit,” he said.

A library, cardio-thoracic operation theatre and dialysis unit would be located on the third floor of the block.

“We intend to expand the facilities of the neurology and nephrology units through this block. The departments can treat more patients at the new facility,” he said.

The hospital authorities also said that more beds would be provided at the two departments.
