Bioinformatics is the latest buzzword in the field of science in which biology, computer science and information technology merge into a single discipline. The ultimate goal of bioinformatics is to enable the discovery of new biological insights as well as to create a global perspective from which unifying principles in biology can be discerned. Today not only in US and Europe but also India has good growth potential in the field of bioinformatics. Some of the biggest pharmaceutical firms like SmithKline Beecham, Merck, Johnson & Johnson and Glaxo are hunting for bioinformatics experts while smaller firms are also equally in the fray. Further, career opportunities can also be found in domains such as pharma-biotech (development of drugs) and agri-biotech (agricultural research), pharmacogenomics (individualised medicine tailored to genetic profiles) proteomics (study of proteins). Various bodies in India are offering courses in bioinformatics which include JNU Delhi, Maduari Kamaraj University, Pune University, Bose Institute, Kolkata, Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Manipal University, Bioinformatics Institute of India and Kannur University. A person who has pursued a course in bioinformatics has an immensely bright future. Even the person doing average has got a great market value and for a bright one only sky is the limit. The renowned bioinformatics research institutes in India are Centre for Biomechanical technology (CBT), New Delhi, Department of Biotechnology, JNU, Delhi, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, Microbiology Department of Biotech Centre, M.S. University of Baroda, Vadodara, Centrel Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, Indian Toxicology Research Centre, Lucknow, Department of Biological Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, National Centre for Biological Science, TIFR Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
