ENTERTAINING: A cultural troup performing at Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign at Mulbagal in Kolar district. KOLAR: A five-day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign was launched at Mulbagal in Kolar district on July 19, which will conclude on Wednesday. Already held in seven districts of Karnataka, the campaign is an outreach strategy to disseminate information about flagship welfare programmes of Union Government such as Bharat Nirman, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Health Mission, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and midday meal programme, the Prime Minister’s 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities and others. The event is organised by the Press Information Bureau in collaboration with other Central media units besides the district administration and zilla panchayat, Kolar. Exhibitions about achievements of various schemes through State Government, seminars, discussions with farmers, women’s selfhelp groups, poets’ meet, cultural programmes and the likee formed the part of event. “Though scores of schemes are in vogue, it is important to create awareness about them in order to ensure that the benefits reached the people,” F.R. Jamadar, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer told The Hindu. Hundreds of people flocked to the Netaji Stadium, where exhibition was organised. Stalls put up by departments such as Sericulture, Animal Husbandry, Agriculture were the most visited by farmers to take guidance from officials. Space scienceDisplay of models of several rockets and other information by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) caught the imagination of hundreds of young students and teachers. “The information provided there gave us a insight into the Indian space odyssey,” Gayatri, a second PU student of Government Junior College, said. An interaction with farmers on mixed crop pattern, which was telecast live on Chandana, was one of the major feature of the campaign. While programmes sponsored by Song and Drama Division provided cultural feast to the local people, a rural sports competition was another highlight focussing on relevance of rural sports activities. While hailing the intention of the Government in conducting such fairs, public were equally equivocal in criticising the lack of political will among people’s representatives. “Had the welfare schemes, which have been in vogue since six decades after Independence, were implemented honestly, poverty would have been eliminated,” Rangappa, a senior citizen, said.
