This Day That Age
The Soviet Premier, Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, told President Nasser of the United Arab Republic that “volunteers” were waiting at Soviet airports to fly to the Middle East if the Arab leader should ask for them, the New York Times reported on July 21. In a dispatch from Cairo, the New York Times quoted Egyptian sources as saying that this was Mr. Khrushchev’s response to Col. Nasser’s question, during the latter’s secret visit to Moscow on July 17, about what assistance he could expect from the Soviet Union if the Western Powers should attack Syria or Iraq.
