HAVERI: Fifteen resolutions, including one urging that the State be declared drought affected, were adopted during the State-level farmers’ convention organised by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha here on Monday. The convention was organised in memory of the farmers Siddalingappa Choori and Puttappa Honnatti who died as a consequence of the police firing in Haveri, and to commemorate the farmers’ revolt at Navalgund and Naragund, commonly known as “Naragund Bandaya”. The convention, which saw the participation of thousands of farmers led by KRRS president K.S. Puttannaiah and working president Kodihalli Chandrashekar, was of the opinion that the compensation given to the family members of the two farmers was not sufficient and demanded that it be enhanced to Rs. 10 lakh. The convention also resolved to urge the Government to give Rs. 5 lakh as compensation to those who were injured in the police firing and withdraw all cases against those who were arrested after the violent protests in Haveri district. Addressing the convention, Mr Puttannaiah warned the Government that if it tried to suppress the farmers’ protest, then “the State will burn”.
