Cauvery Basin Refinery runs at just 40% of its capacity
Shyam Ranganathan
CHENNAI: The Cauvery Basin Refinery (CBR) of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) is running at just 40 per cent of its capacity owing to the restricted availability of crude, K. K. Acharya, managing director, CPCL, said on Monday.
Speaking to The Hindu here, he said the refinery, with one million metric tonne per annum (MMTA) capacity, had been designed to utilise low-sulphur, low-residue local crude. However, the dwindling resources at the Narimanam oil field, and the problems at the PY-3 offshore field, had resulted in its under-utilisation.
The 15-year-old refinery was functioning at 74 per cent utilisation during 2004-05, and the rate came down to 68, 62, and 46 per cent in the succeeding years.
