NEW DELHI: Seeking to further explore the huge potential of methane gas lying below the coal seams, India is going to throw open for bidding around 10 coal bed methane (CBM) blocks in the fourth round of bidding by the end of this year or early next year. Informed sources said that the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) will go ahead with the fourth round of bidding for the CMB blocks and the preliminary work has already been completed. India has so far held three international bid rounds for CBM blocks that attracted companies like world’s third largest energy firm BP plc and Santos of Australia. Gas lying below the coal seams is seen as a major source for bridging the huge energy deficit the country faces. The DGH is preparing a National Data Repository (NDR) that will house geological information of all basins and fields in the country. Recently, the Minister of State for Power, Jairam Ramesh, had visited the DGH office to get first hand information about the working of the organisation and its plans for energy security.
