VDCA elections: politicians enter fray

Special Correspondent

MLAs Gandi Babji, Kanna Babu file papers

Elections will be held on August 3

VISAKHAPATNAM: For the first time, election of office-bearers of the Andhra Cricket Association, held many months ago, witnessed a contest and the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA), the top most district association in the State and an affiliated of ACA, is no different.

Elections of VDCA office-bearers will be held on August 3 and two MLAs of the ruling party U.V. Ramana Murthy Raju (Kannababu) of Elamanchili and Gandi Babji of Parawada are contesting for the posts of president and secretary respectively.

Former ACA president D.V. Subba Rao and present VDCA secretary K. Parthasaradhy are fielded by the present set of office-bearers.

Meanwhile, former ACA president K.V. Rao filed his papers for the post of president.

All are surprised to see the two MLAs, who have no sports background except Mr. Kannababu organising some tournaments in his constituency, entering the fray. One strong rumour making rounds is that a Corporator, peeved when his son was not selected for the district team and wanted to teach a lesson to the VDCA office-bearers, brought in the two MLAs and got support from some disgruntled clubs. The glamour of the sport must have also attracted the politicians.

Patch-up

The situation has forced a patch up between the two groups in the VDCA. One of the VDCA office-bearers said differences in an association are common but they could not keep quite when some people, who do not have any idea about sports, are trying to grab power with the help of a few disgruntled people. “We are not panicky as we lose only a very few votes,” he said.

On the other hand, Mr. Kannababu, when contacted by The Hindu, said he and Mr. Babji decided to enter the fray as the present set of office-bearers of VDCA had completely neglected the game in rural areas and were not selecting the talented players. There were many other issues that have to be rectified, he added.
