BANGALORE: A coffee estate in Chamarajanagar district on Tuesday petitioned the Karnataka High Court against the action of the Forest Department in seizing some of its assets and locking up its estate office. In its petition, Sangameshwar Coffee Estates said it owns and manages coffee plantations under the name of Athikan, Karadhykhakan, Gungergil and Konaddhkanin in Chamarajanagar and Chikmagalur districts. It said the Forest Department issued a seizure notice on July 9, 2008, claiming that its estate in Arabigiri village in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district had encroached upon 37.28 acres of forest land. The notice also claimed that the Athikan bungalow, estate manager’s bungalow, estate office and workers’ shed were on encroached land. It said some of the buildings were locked up by the department. Justice N. Kumar directed forest officials to permit the estate manager to stay at his residence. He also asked them to reopen the estate office to take away its records. He adjourned further hearing on the case.
