Girl suffers from unusual growth of her belly

Staff Reporter

Doctors fear that a tumour is growing fast inside her stomach

BHUBANESWAR: As a five-year-old girl, Minu Mishra, should have been enjoying her childhood to the fullest by running and playing all around. Instead, she can hardly move normally under the burden of an abnormal belly.

The daughter of a daily labourer from Nimpara area under Puri district was admitted in the Capital Hospital here where doctors were amazed after seeing the large size of her belly. Minu, whose weight should have between 12 kg and 15 kg, now weighs 36 kg.

Doctors of Capital Hospital fear that a tumour is growing fast inside her stomach and at the same time she has been gathering water inside her for quite some time.

“We have asked for detail investigation including ultra sound and blood sample test. The exact position can become clearer only when those investigation reports are analyzed,” said doctor Pramila Dei, head of paediatrics. Until a year ago, the girl was like any other normal child. When her belly started growing, the local doctors were consulted but they could not diagnose the disease. As the financial condition of the parents was not sound, the girl was left to suffer. Minu cannot even sit and have food. Even she cannot sleep normally. Situation has worsened to such an extent that parents cannot lift the girl when she complains fatigue.

A desperate parent had gone to Chief Minister’s grievance cell last Saturday but no concrete assurance was given to them. Without having any other option, the child was admitted in the Capital Hospital.

“We are aware of the financial condition of the girl’s parents. State Red Cross Society is bearing the expense of the child’s treatment. The investigation to be conducted has been made free of cost. But I apprehend treatment of the child cannot be done here,” said Umakant Mishra, Chief Medical Officer of Capital Hospital.
