Chitradurga: The district will soon have a full-fledged postgraduate (PG) centre of Kuvempu University. It has been a long-pending demand of several educationists in Chitradurga to establish a PG centre in the district. According to them, poor students from the district found it difficult to pursue a PG course in neighbouring cities such as Davangere and Shimoga. Speaking to The Hindu over telephone, Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigar said that the Government’s objective was to set up PG centres in every district of the State for the benefit of economically backward students. He said that the district administration had allotted about 100 acres of land at Guddada Rangavanahalli village on the outskirts of the city for the centre. He said that a proposal of Rs. 25 crore had been made to construct the centre, which would have various departments and hostels. Prof. Sherigar said that since no provision had been made to allot funds in the budget, the university had asked the Government to release at least Rs. 60 lakh to commence the work and had sought the rest of the funds in a phased manner.
