CID to investigate students’ death
Manas Dasgupta
AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government on Tuesday asked the CID (Crime) to inquire into the death of two students of Asaram Bapu’s ashram-run school in Motera on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
Director-General of Police P.C. Pande announced this here after the parents of the boys called on Chief Minister Narendra Modi and accepted lime juice from him to break their nine-day fast demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the incident. Mr. Modi assured them that those found guilty would not be spared.
The bodies of Deepesh (11) and Abhishek Vaghela (12), cousin brothers and students of the Asaram Bapu Gurukul, were recovered from the Sabarmati river bed, just behind the Ashram, on July 5.
While the police initially claimed that the two died due to drowning, the parents expressed apprehension that their children might have been victims of “occult practices” allegedly being pursued by some ashram inmates.
