Udupi: The Autorickshaw Drivers and Operators’ Association took out a rally from the service bus-stand to Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Monday demanding a revision in the autorickshaw fares. In a memorandum submitted at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the association said that the minimum fare of Rs. 12 and Rs. 9 for every kilometer thereafter was fixed when the price of petrol was Rs. 53 a litre. But now the ordinary petrol, including oil, was costing Rs. 58 a litre. Branded petrol was priced at Rs. 65 a litre, including oil. Most of the petrol bunks claim that ordinary petrol was not available, forcing the autorickshaw operators to buy branded petrol, the memorandum said. Besides petrol price, the price of auto spare parts had increased enormously, not to speak of the prices of food grains and other essential items. The inflationary pressure had made life difficult for autorickshaw operators. Hence the autorickshaw fare should be increased by 40 per cent. The district administration should ensure that ordinary petrol was available at the outlets. President of Malpe Autorickshaw Operators Association Anand Kunar was present.
