3-day prayer to propitiate rain god

HYDERABAD: Elaborate arrangements have been made in the Exhibition Grounds here for the conduct of a unique, 3-day ‘Ashtotthara Satha Kumbhatmaka Maha Varunayagam’ from Wednesday to please the rain god.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will be present at the ‘yagam’ by the Pushpagiri peethadipathi, Sri Vidyanarasimha Bharati Swamy at 9.30 a.m. Also in attendance will be several ministers including J. Ratnakar Rao (Endowments) and B. Karunakar Reddy, chairman, Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams, which is handling the religious event to get rains and end the dry spell in the State.
Mr. Rao expressed happiness over the arrangements made after a visit to the site, accompanied by Mr. Karunakara Reddy and TTD Executive Officer, K.V. Ramanachari.
Mr. Ramanachari later told The Hindu that sheds had been erected to protect the 115 homagundams planned for the yagnam, from possible rain. The homagundams will be attended by two priests each. Seating arrangements have been made to accommodate about 5,000 people.
