HYDERABAD: Towards promoting eco-sensitivity and conservation of environment, students and political leadership should be involved in a big way, suggested Special Chief Secretary A.K. Goel here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of four-day workshop on ‘Sustainability of Lake Remediation and Interventions’ organised by Hyderabad Urban Development Authority and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Goel said students from KG to PG should be made to contribute one hour per week and take up activity to restore the ecosystem. Similarly, elected representatives from all levels should be made part of the campaign by the HUDA, he remarked.

The urban development authority should also take up initiatives such as eco-monitoring or green grading of industries and also have a small share of amount being spent for projects such as outer ring road for conservation of lakes, Mr. Goel said. “When nearly Rs. 4,000 crore are spent on road, can’t we have 10 per cent of it for lakes,” he asked.

HUDA Vice-Chairman K.S. Jawahar Reddy outlined the measures being put in place for conservation of lakes. There are 400 big and small lakes in the city of which 169 have been notified for protection.

Hussainsagar

In association with the JICA, the efforts were on for restoration and maintenance of Hussainsagar. JICA resident representative Tomoyuki Fujii and JICA expert Toshihiro Arai participated in the workshop which comprised delegates from different countries.
