YSR congratulates Manmohan Singh

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the emphatic victory of the United Progressive Alliance Government in the vote of confidence.

Dr. Reddy also congratulated UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for her astute leadership.

In a message, the Chief Minister said the sterling victory of the Government showed that the people accepted the pro-poor and pro-farmer policies of the UPA. The victory with a comfortable margin despite withdrawal of Left and coming together of the BJP and other parties reflects that the UPA Government is going on right lines, he said.

People supported the welfare and development programmes of the Government besides ratifying the nuclear deal, he said.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister K. Rosaiah said the attempts to bring down the Government at Centre fell flat.

“It is an historic event for the UPA as it was won the trust vote despite last ditch bid by the Left and BJP along with other political parties to defeat the Congress led UPA,” Mr. Rosaiah remarked.

‘UPA lost moral battle’

The Communist Party of India State council said though it had won the vote of confidence technically, the UPA lost the vote on moral grounds.

CPI State secretary K. Narayana criticised the Prime Minister for not taking the nuclear deal as a political issue and rather allowing the Congress leaders to indulge in horse trading for securing the required numbers. MPs were looked upon as “Ongole bulls” that were ready for sale. He demanded a high level probe into the bribes offered to some MPs.

Replying to queries, he said the Left, TDP, TRS and other parties had came together on a specific issue – the nuclear deal. As the political situation was changing fast in the State, the party had decided to wait and watch before taking a stand on the alliances in the next elections.

PM should resign: BJP

State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya demanded resignation of the Prime Minister in the wake of “cash for vote scam” and announced that the party would organise protest programmes across the State.

In a statement here, he said the scam had dented the image of Dr. Singh and demanded an inquiry by an independent panel of eminent jurists to unravel the ‘conspiracy’.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Dattatreya said the UPA Government had won the trust vote numerically but lost morally. The ‘allurement’ of three party MPs was a setback to Dr. Singh’s image. The Congress won’t be able to face people as “corruption is a big issue,” he said.

Black day: TRS

Telangana Rashtra Samiti MLA. T. Harish Rao termed the trust vote win, “black day in democracy”. “The manner in which the Congress resorted to horse trading shows its desperation,” he observed.

He conceded that political polarisation would take place in the coming days.

He did not rule out similar polarisation in the State.
