Chennai: Third-seeded Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF checkmated R. Dinesh, a beginner, in twelve moves and just five minutes in the opening round of the third S.K. Narasihman Memorial FIDE-rating chess tournament at the Nehru stadium on Tuesday. Smooth sailingThe top three seeds checkmated their opponents and had a smooth sailing. Top seed and defending champion Ram S. Krishnan (BSNL) beat Daniel Raja in 36 moves with white pieces, while second seed and former National sub-junior champion R. Ashwath beat Debarshi Pal in 22 moves with black pieces. Favourites had a field day and are among the 72 players who have won their opening round. Ten rounds remain to be played. A total of 64 FIDE rated players are competing in this event. Important results (round one): Ram S. Krishnan bt Daniel Raja; Debarshi Pal lost to R. Ashwath. Syed Anwar Shazuli bt R. Dinesh; L.
