Binayak Sen’s release demanded

NEW DELHI: Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendar Sachar on Tuesday said the real reason behind the continued incarceration of human rights activist Binayak Sen was that he had thrown a spanner into the works of big industrial houses and the Chhattisgarh Government who were planning to acquire the mineral-rich resources of the State by displacing tribal people.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences Front for Social Consciousness, Mr. Sachar lamented the insensitiveness of the authorities to appeals for his release and added that Dr. Sen had exposed the government’s nefarious designs by standing with the people in their struggle for safeguarding their livelihood.

Tracing the evolution of Dr. Sen from a young doctor to a social activist, noted epidemiologist C. Satyamala said: “Dr. Sen was in jail because he took the side of the people in fighting the anti-people development model being pushed by the Government to propagate corporate interests. The Government is anxious to quell any opposition to its idea of the corporate-oriented development and is using his case to test the level of pressure that the intelligentsia can mount against the Government.”

The meeting also adopted a resolution condemning the Government for the continued incarceration of Dr. Sen and demanded his immediate release. “This gathering is of the considered opinion that speaking against injustice is not just a matter of right but our solemn duty,” it said.
