Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Congress party has decided to continue its “awareness campaign” on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal, even though the government had won the trust vote on Tuesday. Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president A.V. Subramanian told reporters here on Wednesday that different wings and departments of the party would launch the campaign. The programme would provide an opportunity to the Congressmen to reach out to the people in all the four regions of the Union Territory and explain the significance of the deal against the backdrop of power shortage prevailing in the country, besides highlighting the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre and the Congress government in Puducherry. Street-corner meetingsRecalling the vehicle rally held by the Mahila Congress on Saturday in support of the nuclear deal, he said the activists of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) would hold street-corner meetings in villages and towns in the first phase. The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) had already announced its programme to conduct public awareness campaign on the issue, he said. Rally in PuducherryChief of the Puducherry unit of the IYC K. Pandian, who was also present at the press conference, said the youth activists would hold a massive rally in Puducherry in the second phase. Mr. Subramanian said the outcome of the trust vote had clearly shown that the Communist parties “stood isolated by making a vain bid to block the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal.” It had also exposed the “ridiculous strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party which welcomed the deal initially, chose to join hands with the Left to oppose the agreement.” Asked if the “infighting” in the Puducherry unit of the Congress and the Ministry would come to the fore again, he said the party high command would take necessary steps to “sort out the differences in a democratic manner.” Mr. Subramanian, along with Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, distributed sweets to the public. He and the party activists burst crackers in front of the PCC office hailing the victory of the UPA government in the trust vote. Workers owing allegiance to the INTUC also distributed sweets and burst crackers.
