Udhagamanmdalam: An effective waste management plan is yet to be put in place in this popular holiday destination, lamented the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam. In a memorandum sent to Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V.Patil, the secretary of the Association G.Janardhanan pointed out that the garbage generated in the town was not being segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. A facility that had been put up sometime ago at Kandhal near here to produce organic manure was now in a state of neglect. It was a reflection of how the tax payers’ money was going down the drain. If efforts were made to set up organic manure manufacturing units in all the wards, not only could the waste be converted into wealth but also jobs could be provided to some people. The problems arising from shortage of fertilizers could be tackled to a significant extent he said and added that the worldwide demand for organic products was on the rise. Regretting that disaster management plans were not being implemented, Mr.Janardhanan said that owing to the water level rising during heavy rains in the Kodappamund channel which cut through the town, the people residing in areas like Green Fields were in a constant state of fear. The administration should announce without delay when the channel would be cleaned and de-silted. He said that he hoped that the use of solar energy would be encouraged by those who were in-charge of maintaining street lights.
