Interest-free loans for farmers from Saturday

ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be the chief guest at the State-level launch of the disbursal of the Cooperative Department’s interest-free loans for paddy cultivation scheme, at Nedumudi here on July 26.

Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran will preside over the function, scheduled at 10 a.m. Coir and Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran would distribute loans to farmers of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts, District Cooperative Bank (DCB) president C.B. Chandrababu and general manager S. Sreekumar told a press conference here on Wednesday.

They said the majority of farmers would be given loans at the inaugural function itself, adding that identification of beneficiaries was on. Agricultural Production Commissioner K. Jayakumar would explain the features of the scheme at the function.

Interest-free loans for paddy cultivation were introduced in the country by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala last year, when Rs.10.5 crore was given as loans to farmers in Palakkad. This was from the total of Rs.68 crore agriculture loans given last year. The scheme will be extended to other districts. The beneficiaries will include farmers from the Kuttanad region in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, and those from the kole fields of Thrissur.
