UoH inks pact with software firm

Staff Reporter

‘It is a fine example of the industry-academia relationship’

HYDERABAD: University of Hyderabad (UoH) and Altair Engineering India (AEI), a global software company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together in the areas of research and development, student internship, teaching, training and other academic activities.

Under the MoU, which was signed in the university campus on Wednesday, the Department of Computer and Information Sciences (DCIS) of the university and AEI will also seek mutual assistance in conducting, participating in seminars and symposia and commercialisation of innovations. The MOU is stemmed from the success of a collaborative project of DCIS and AEI in grid computing, an online computing process that connects and operates a pool of distributed computers to perform tasks such as drug discovery, economic forecasting, seismic analysis, and back-office data processing. The results were showcased at Super Computing Event - 2007 held in Nevada, USA.

“We collaborate with AEI on grid computing solutions for both commercial and academic research, which will help us conduct research in high-end computing technologies,” said University Vice-Chancellor, Seyed E. Hasnain. The MoU would enable DCIS and School of Life Sciences to work on simulation, enterprise computing and other cutting-edge technologies. It also encourages the commercialisation of innovations by university faculty and students.

The ideas from the university would be developed into business products with royalty to be provided to the innovators and university. “This is a fine example of the industry-academia relationship and I see bright prospectus for our synergy in grid computing,” said Prof. Hasnain. The Managing Director of AEI, Pavan Kumar said, “we are excited about the MoU. We always want to work with the institutions with calibre such as UoH.” Altair Engineering India is a market leader in cutting-edge technologies such as computer aided engineering, enterprise computing, engineering analytics, high-end consolidation and grid computing.
