ALPE D’HUEZ (France): Carlos Sastre of Spain has won the 17th stage of the Tour de France, the hardest ride this year, up three devastating Alpine climbs, to take the overall lead from teammate Franck Schleck, who he now leads by 1 minute 24seconds. Sastre took the yellow jersey by speeding ahead of the main title contenders on Wednesday in the final ascent of the 210.5-kilometer ride from Embrun to L’Alpe d’Huez. The stage was the last of three in the Alps. Riders will face a time trial on Saturday that’s likely to determine the winner. Cadel Evans of Australia didn’t lose significant time. He remains a favourite to win the Tour, barring a crash or other mishap, because he is the best time-trial cyclist among the remaining contenders. On Wednesday, the Aussie — who trails Sastre by 1 min 34sec — fought manfully all the way up the Alpe d’Huez in a group that included Schleck. — Agencies
