Roddick moves past Mahut

TORONTO: Former champion Andy Roddick needed 18 aces to put away Nicolas Mahut of France 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-3 and reach the third round of the Rogers Cup here on Tuesday.

Roddick, title winner in 2003, cruised through the first set but couldn’t achieve a break in the second, which Mahut won in a tiebreaker. The sixth-seeded Roddick took the only break chance in the final set for a 2-0 lead and finished the second round match with an ace.

“I thought I moved well and felt good physically,” Roddick said. “All in all, I think it was a good match.”

Guillermo Canas, the 2002 champion, fell for the second time this year to Robin Soderling of Sweden, who served 11 aces in winning their first round encounter 7-5, 6-1.

Tommy Haas of Germany conceded only six points on serve while beating former No. 1 Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-2

Gilles Simon of France beat American qualifier Donald Young 6-1, 6-3 to set up a second round match with the top-ranked Roger Federer.

Sania & Mattek advance

At Los Angeles, Sania Mirza and her partner Bethanie Mattek stormed into the quarterfinals of the East West Bank Classic defeating Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-4.

They next face the Russian pair of Elena Versina and Vera Zvonareva.

In singles, Wimbledon quarterfinalist Nadia Petrova moved into the second round with a 6-0, 6-4 win over fellow Russian Alina Jidkova.

Serena pulls out

However, the injury-plagued tournament lost another star when Wimbledon finalist and No. 2 seed Serena Williams withdrew due to an injured left knee. Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova were the other high-profile players to pull out of the tournament.

Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic, who could claim the No. 1 ranking in the world by winning here, will play her first match against the 98th-ranked American Vania King. King beat Angela Haynes 6-3, 6-3.
