BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to impose a 20 per cent power cut till the end of this month and 25 per cent in August on account of deficient rainfall and the low water-level in hydel reservoirs. The State’s power situation is precariously poised and it has been decided to limit daily consumption of power to 100 million units (mu) in July and August from the present 115 to 120 mu a day, Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. According to sources, Bangalore will have to face power cuts of about four hours a day. Making a statement in the Assembly, Mr. Eshwarappa said the Cabinet subcommittee would review the power situation on a weekly basis and restore power supply in the event that the monsoon picked up and reservoir levels improved. He said the State, which required 128 mu a day, faced a shortage of 26 mu. About 65 mu was generated in the State and it received 35 mu a day from Central power generation units. Nearly 60 per cent of the State’s power supply depends on hydroelectricity. The hydroelectric stations at Linganamakki, Supa and Mani reservoirs generated 1,498 mu on July 22 this year against 5,666 mu on the same day last year. On an average 40 mu is received from these stations each day.
