Three killed in separate accidents

ALAPPUZHA: Two men and a woman were killed in separate road accidents in the past 24 hours on National Highway 47 passing through the district. Instances of other accidents without casualties too were reported on the slippery road after continuous spells of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The first of the three victims was Annamma Thomas, 65, of Kattunkal Thaiparambil house, a resident of Vazhicheri in Alappuzha town. Ms. Thomas was crossing the highway near the Poonkavu Church when a speeding car hit her fatally late on Tuesday night.

The second accident was around 3 a.m. when Sunil Varghese, 23, a resident of Kappakada, died after a lorry rammed the two-wheeler on which he was travelling along with his friend Suneesh.

The accident occurred at Kappakada near Punnapra on the highway.

The third accident occurred around 5 a.m. when the Innova car driven by Mathai Kunjachen, 65, a native of Kottarakara, hit a lorry from behind near the Sree Narayana College, Cherthala. Mr. Kunjachen, who was returning after dropping his son at the Nedumbassery Airport, was killed on the spot.

Mr. Kunjachen’s grandson Joji Thomas sustained injuries. Joji is undergoing treatment at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.

No casualties were reported from the other accidents, which included a collision between a lorry and a car at Matheri near Thottapally.
