Alappuzha
ALAPPUZHA: One person was killed when a wall of the house he was dismantling along with a group of others collapsed on him in Arattupuzha here on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Sunil Kumar, 25. Mr. Kumar, along with his neighbours, was dismantling the remaining portions of his house at Kargil Junction near. The house was damaged in a tidal wave attack that has been troubling Alappuzha for the past two days. However, a wall that was about to be dismantled collapsed on him around 3 p.m., crushing him to death, Karthikapally tahsildar Nooruddin Kunju said. The district administration would hand over an immediate assistance of Rs.5,000 to Mr. Kumar’s family, he said. Meanwhile, 66 people from 10 families have been evacuated to camps in government schools in Arattupuzha after tidal waves forced sea water into their homes. The sea has been rough and tidal waves have been lashing the coast at several areas. Several spots in the taluks of Karthikapally and Ambalapuzha, including Neerkunnam, Purakad, Valiyazheekal, Punnapra, Andhakaranazhi and Thrikkunnapuzha were reported to have been inundated.District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan said control rooms had been opened at the Collectorate and all taluk offices to monitor the situation round the clock. “The entire Revenue machinery has been placed on an alert and arrangements are being made to evacuate more people from the affected areas, if need be. Stones are also being unloaded at problematic spots to reduce the impact of the waves,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.
