Centre for learning: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiling the plaque to mark the inaugural function of the Institute of Mathematics and Application at Andharua in Khurda district on Wednesday. — BHUBANESWAR: Institute of Mathematics and Applications (IMA), a unique centre to encourage study of mathematics and putting the subject into practice, was inaugurated here on Wednesday. Although various programmes of the institute were started way back in 1999, the main campus sprawled over 23 acres of land at Andharua on the outskirt of Bhubaneswar was opened by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday. Supported by domestic steel behemoth Tata Steel, the institute has conceptualized unique study programmes based on mathematics, which have started recognition at international level. Mr. Patnaik said the institute would help create scientific temper among student community as well as spread the joy of mathematics to different corners of the State besides doing high level of research. “I will soon convene a meeting of reputed mathematicians and other people concerned to get their feedbacks on lacunae and requirement of the institute. We want to see the campus develop as world class centre for learning,” Mr. Patnaik said. Speaking on the occasion managing director of Tata Steel B. Muthuraman highlighted the company’s social responsibility especially in the field of education. Long-term impact“We can always build steel plant or road, which is necessary for nation’s development. But creating ambience of education is a long-term impact on the society,” Mr. Muthuraman said, adding that Tata Steel would always support meaningful ventures in future. Swadhin Patnaik, IMA director and who single-mindedly brought the institute to this level, was effusive over the prospects of different programmes. He said even before a student had completed his post graduation, he was offered to do Ph.D in Europe. Similarly, a student who was part of institute’s talent haunt programme in rural Orissa, participated in the international mathematics Olympiad, Mr. Patnaik. Even graduate student of the institute could directly join Ph.D programme. “We are looking forward to improve mathematics education from school to college level. Different programmes will be undertaken in coordination with universities across the State,” the IMA director said. Science and Technology Minister Duryodhan Majhi also addressed the gathering.
