BHUBANESWAR: The ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance observed a day-long bandh in Mayurbhanj district on Wednesday to highlight their opposition to the reported demand of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha president Shibu Soren for merger of three districts of the State with Jharkhand. The bandh proved to be a success as educational institutions and business establishment remained closed throughout the district during the day. Normal life, however, was badly affected as passengers buses remained off the roads. Thousands of vehicles carrying goods were stranded on the highways. The bandh was complete in almost all the towns across the district. Hundreds of workers of the BJD and BJP took out rallies and burnt effigies of Mr. Soren to demonstrate their opposition to the JMM leader’s demand for merger of three districts with Jharkhand. Mr. Soren had recently demanded that the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh should be merged with Jharkhand for the creation of Greater Jharkhand as one of the conditions for extending support to the UPA government during the trust vote in Parliament on Tuesday. Meanwhile, senior leader of Communist Party of India(Marxist) Shivaji Patnaik condemned Mr. Soren’s demand. In a statement, Mr. Patnaik demanded that both the UPA government as well as the Congress party should clarify the issue.
