CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Wednesday gave only two weeks time to Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police S Praveen Kumar to set right the road traffic system of the Millennium city. Warning the police inspectors of Lalbagh and Bidanasi police stations to mend their ways, the court threatened that they are liable to face contempt charges. Summoning the DCP and the two inspectors to court, the bench of Justice B.P. Das and Justice M.M. Das expressed their unhappiness over the poor road traffic system in the city. The bench categorically said the two inspectors have neglected in their duties in clearing the traffic and debris on the roads falling in their respective police station jurisdictions. “Anti-social elements are regularly creating nuisances in the areas under these police stations and the policemen concerned are hand-in-glove with them,” the HC observed. Threatening to pass immediate contempt orders against the police inspectors, the bench, however, decided to give one last chance to the erring policemen. It also asked the local electric distribution company--CESU, to remove all the electric poles and transformers which are obstructing smooth traffic flow in the city. CESU had earlier submitted an affidavit saying the Company needs at least Rs 3 crore to remove all the encroaching polls and transformers. These orders of the bench came while adjudicating over a PIL filed by a social activist saying the traffic system of the city is deteriorating day-by-day.
