THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast the ongoing spell of rainfall over Kerala to intensify by degrees during the next four-five days. The IMD’s numerical weather prediction models show signs of a low pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal close to the Orissa coast to stir up the monsoon over major parts of the peninsula, including the West Coast, during this period. The ‘low’ is expected to fall in place by Sunday. The monsoon winds blowing from the Arabian Sea have now begun to straighten on its approach to the Kerala coast for the first time this season. With the formation of the ‘low’ on the other side of the peninsula the winds from the southwest blowing across the State’s coast could also pick up to levels of speed ideal for copious rainfall. Almost the whole State received good rainfall on Wednesday. During the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m., Kanjirappally and Peerumedu received rainfall of 6 cm each.
