Seeking divine grace: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy praying at the Maha Varuna Yagam in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: As rain continues to elude several parts of the State, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has decided to perform Maha Varuna Yagam to ‘please the rain god to open up the skies’.

The three-day yagam that commenced here on Wednesday involves 150 priests from TTD performing the traditional ritual simultaneously in 108 homagundams.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy along with Ministers J. Ratnakar Rao (Endowments), K. Jana Reddy (Home) and M. Mukesh Goud (BC Welfare) visited the venue to mark the formal launch of the event. The yagam formally commenced after TTD priests offered prayers to Lord Venkateswara and gave blessings to the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues.

TTD chairman B. Karunakar Reddy and Executive Officer K.V. Ramana Chary, who accompanied Dr. Reddy, explained them about the significance of the event.

The Chief Minister hoped that sufficient rain would be received in the coming days.

Dr. Reddy appreciated the TTD for its various programmes like Kalyana Mastu and assured the Government’s full support to the Devasthanams.
