MLAs’ salary and pension bills passed

Thiruvananthapuram: The Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed the Payment of Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill and the Kerala Payment of Pension to Members of Legislature (Amendment) Bill seeking to raise salaries, allowances and pensions of MLAs.

Prior to passing the Bill, the House accepted the suggestion of leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy for the appointment of an independent agency to recommend pay and pension hikes for legislators in view of the public criticism against the two Bills.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan favoured the suggestion, following which Speaker K Radhakrishnan endorsed the proposal.
