Protest against criminal assault on girl in MCD school

NEW DELHI: To register their protest against the criminal assault on a girl student at a Municipal Primary School in Ashok Vihar here this past week, members of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi shouted slogans against the ruling BJP during the MCD Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday and later boycotted it. The meeting was finally adjourned.

Blaming the BJP-led MCD for the incident, Leader of the Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma and Standing Committee members Khawinder Singh Captain, Anita Babbar and Khurram Iqbal strongly condemned the incident and demanded resignation of Mayor Arti Mayor, Leader of the House Subhash Arya and Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta.

“Step up patrolling”

Dubbing the incident as “the worst ever in the history of MCD”, they alleged that it was the result of “lethargy and failure of the BJP”. They demanded that at least two security guards be provided to each municipal primary school and in the meantime the Delhi police be requested to step up patrolling around school areas.

Mr. Sharma also recounted earlier instances of complaints about assault, eve-teasing and harassment reported from different MCD schools and reminded the members that he had also brought a resolution before the Standing Committee earlier proposing non-appointment of male teachers in girl schools. “Though the resolution was passed unanimously, it has not been implemented yet, clearly reflecting the lethargy and misadministration of the BJP,” Mr. Sharma said.
