Scheduled Castes seek law to enhance reservation

Three-day international convention held in New York

HYDERABAD: The three-day Fifth International Convention of Dalits and Minorities’ Forum, which concluded in New York in the first week of this month, demanded enactment of an all-India reservation law to enhance reservation for Scheduled Castes to 22 per cent from the present 4 to 11 per cent.

500 delegates

J.B. Raju, president, Andhra Pradesh branch of Dalit Sena, who addressed the convention attended by 500 delegates from 57 countries, told a press conference here on Wednesday that speakers had called for job reservations in the private sector.

They wanted an all-India judicial service on the lines of IAS/IPS for Scheduled Castes and minorities and a special three-month drive to fill the 2.5 lakh backlog vacancies of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The convention, hosted by the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin and attended by Ramvilas Paswan, Union Minister and national president of the Dalit Sena, called for a special police task force to investigate cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes. Special prosecutors should be appointed and more special courts constituted to speed up investigation and give stringent punishment to those responsible.
