Good response to exhibition of laptops

GOOD CHANCE: Students operating laptops in Tiruchi on Wednesday.

TIRUCHI: The exhibition on laptop computers, supplied by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) under the ‘Student Laptop Scheme,’ held at the Collectorate drew a good response on Wednesday.

The exhibition featured the laptops on offer at subsidised prices to students, government officials, journalists, armed service personnel and ex-servicemen.

ELCOT has planned to sell about 1 lakh units of the Acer Travelmate laptops in two versions priced at Rs.29,429 and Rs.31,717.

Groups of students from various schools and colleges visited the exhibition. Students were allowed to get a feel of the computers and also presented with a demonstration.

In Perambalur on Friday

An exhibition of laptop computers will be held at the Collectorate in Perambalur on Friday.

The laptops would feature Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 1.8 GHz T 5670 processor / 2 MB cache / 800 Mhz FSB, 320 GB Hard Disk, 2 GB RAM, 15.4” extra bright TFT monitor, gegabite ethernet, wireless bluetooth, firewire, SD Card and DVD writer.

The operating system in these laptops will be Linux and it will have a range of useful software like Netbeans 6, Psotgre SQL, MySQL, Jboss, Jasper Report, QT Designer, Typing Tutor, Open Office Writer/Calc/Impress and Virtual Box. They would also feature a digital video camera.

Students, government officials, journalists, personnel with armed forces and ex-servicemen can check out on the laptops at the exhibition and place bookings for purchase through www.elcot.in, according to a press release from Collector Anil Meshram.
