Rs.51 crore written off under debt relief scheme in Ariyalur district

Staff Reporter

DISCUSSION: Collector R. Sudalaikannan reviewing achievements of banks in Ariyalur on Wednesday.

ARIYALUR: A total of 25,759 farmers had benefited under the debt relief scheme announced by the Central Government, and the banks in the district have written off loans to the tune of Rs.51.26 crore, the Collector, R. Sudalaikannan, said.

Presiding over a meeting of bank officials here on Wednesday, Mr. Sudalaikannan said that the State Bank of India, the lead bank, had written off a maximum of Rs.22.42 crore.

On an agitation launched by a group of farmers recently at Kuvagam in front of the branch of the Punjab National Bank, alleging non-implementation of the debt relief scheme, the Collector directed the bank officials to take immediate action to abide by the norms of the Centre in this regard.

Emphasising the need for immediate sanctioning of loans to the women members of self-help groups, the Collector said that the ‘Mahalir Thittam’ had drafted a special block-wise programme for rating these groups and had already identified 152 SHGs of Ariyalur block, which qualified for bank loans.

Similar proposals would be sent to the banks in course of time, as and when the rating process was completed.

The Collector urged the bank officials to utilise the subsidy of Rs.61.85 lakh released by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation and sanction loans immediately to the targeted 1,563 beneficiaries. With the wages for the beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme being credited to their bank accounts, he urged the bank officials to open the accounts without any hitch.

The Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, Pandian; the Assistant General Manager of Reserve Bank of India, Kasinathan; the Assistant Manager of the Lead Bank, S. Kothandan and the District Development Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Sekar were among those who spoke.
