PALANI: Pandemonium reigned in the Palani Municipal Council Hall as the revision of property tax was read out. After heated arguments, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors walked out of the hall to protest against the revision of property tax. Such revision would burden the common man, they said. The municipal meeting was presided over by the chairman T. Rajamanickam here on Wednesday. Amid chaos, the council passed the resolution on revision of property tax. Under the revised system, property tax for residential buildings in the temple town would go up by 10 per cent. Fifty per cent hike was approved by the council for industrial buildings and cent per cent for commercial buildings. Even before the commencement of discussion about tax revision, the Communist councillors had a wordy dual with Congress councillors. When Congress councillor Kandhasamy thanked all the parties that voted in favour of the UPA Government in the confidence motion brought by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Parliament yesterday, Communist councillors vociferously protested against his remarks and insisted that the council should discuss subjects relevant to the municipal council meeting only. Congress councillors did not oblige. Councillors divided into groups and argued with each other endlessly. Disgusted over the rude behaviour of the councillors, the chairman adjourned the meeting for 15 minutes. In a fit of anger, a congress councillor pushed the chairs down. Meanwhile, the AIADMK councillors raised the tax revision and walked out of the hall. Later, the council meeting was resumed. DMK councillors passed resolutions on various development works.
