Congress workers celebrate UPA victory

Staff Correspondent

Upbeat: Congress workers celebrating in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

CHITRADURGA: The district Congress here on Wednesday celebrated the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government winning the confidence motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Party members gathered at Mahatma Gandhi Circle holding aloft party flags. Addressing the gathering, Congress leader and former district Youth Congress president Tippeswamy said the Left parties and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had made a futile attempt to topple the Government. Their efforts failed to break the unity of the Congress and other secular parties supporting it, he remarked.

With regard to the State, he alleged that the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government had done nothing for the farming community.

They had made several promises such as distributing rice at Rs. 2 to the poor, but failed to deliver on the promise, Mr. Tippeswamy added.

He accused the Government of being under the influence of mine owners. District secretary of the Congress Shivu Yadav also spoke.

BJP protest

While the Congress celebrated the victory, district BJP workers took out a protest rally accusing the UPA Government of “buying MPs”.

Several party members, who had assembled at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here, were addressed by district party president G.S. Suresh.

Mr. Suresh alleged that just to stay in power, the Congress had done something unethical. People knew the intentions of Congress and would teach the party a fitting lesson in the next general elections, he said.
