Two accused in police net after 12 years
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The city police on Wednesday arrested two brothers who were evading arrest for about 12 years after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case.
According to police sources, Krishnamurthy (42) and Karunakaran (40) of Chennai murdered an Armed Reserve police constable, Muthukumarasamy, at the Basin Bridge junction in 1990.
They were convicted and sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment.
In 1995, one of them came out on bail and the other on parole, but both absconded.
On an appeal by the police for enhanced punishment to the accused, the Madras High Court sentenced them to life imprisonment.
Soon after taking charge as Police Commissioner, R. Sekar, formed a special team to track down the accused. While there was no trace of them in the earlier address (Kolapuri Nagar), the team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Washermenpet), N. Kamini, made enquiries with the kin and friends of the escapees.
Tip-off
Following a tip-off, the police arrested Krishnamurthy and Karunakaran in Avadi on Tuesday night. They had returned to Chennai recently after staying in different States.
“We have taken a list of those convicted in various cases and evading arrest. Action is being taken to arrest them soon,” Mr. Sekar said.
