TDP-BSP alliance in the offing in State
Special Correspondent
New Delhi: The Telugu Desam Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have in principle decided to have a seat-sharing arrangement in Andhra Pradesh for the Lok Sabha polls. The TDP, which is part of the United National Progressive Alliance, already has an understanding with the Left parties in the State.
This was disclosed to The Hindu by TDP chief and former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. The tie-up is expected to substantially raise the electoral prospects of all three parties, and more so should the arrangement expand to include the Telangana Rashtra Samiti. However, Mr. Naidu made it clear that no formal talks had been initiated with the BSP chief Mayawati on seat sharing.
Asked if Ms. Mayawati was acceptable to him as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the UNPA-Left combine, Mr. Naidu said the question would be considered at the appropriate time. But, as of today, no decision had been taken on her leadership.
Speaking on economic reforms, Mr. Naidu said reforms were necessary and must be carried out.
