SI locks himself with wife’s body for 2 days

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A police officer, who locked himself in his house for more than two days with the body of his wife, was detained for questioning by the Uppal police on Wednesday.

The decomposed body of the woman, Neelavathi, presumed to have died on Sunday was sent for autopsy.

The detained officer, Sub-Inspector Venugopal (45) working in the Special Protection Force (SPF) was living in a single room in Chilukanagar with his wife and was last seen on Sunday night. The couple did not come out at all and suspicions arose after the house owner Ravi cornered Venugopal demanding the rent when he came out on Wednesday morning. Venugopal hurriedly went back and locked himself in.

Foul smell

A puzzled Ravi forced the doors open with the help of locality people after they noticed the foul smell. They saw the SI sitting beside the decomposed body. A half-emptied liquor bottle was lying in the room. Police found no evidence to suggest that the woman was killed.

The possibility of the woman being strangled to death was being probed. Venugopal was stated to be in an inebriated condition .

Neighbours told the police that Neelavathi and Venugopal were known to consume liquor and quarrel frequently. Worried over the parents’ behaviour, their son and daughter were living separately with their relatives, the police said.
