MoU to upgrade higher secondary education signed

CHENNAI: The School Education Department entered into an agreement with the American India Foundation (AIF) Trust here on Wednesday.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) facilitates a partnership between the Department and the Trust and is aimed at enhancing higher secondary education in the Tamil Nadu through a Digital Equaliser Programme.

The programme would look at aspects such as continued teacher training and inclusion of technology and modern learning aids in classroom learning.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said the initiative was in line with the Department’s decision to engage in public-private partnerships to improve both physical and qualitative aspects of school education in the State. “I had told the Assembly that we intended to enter into strategic partnerships with corporates in order to enhance existing infrastructure in schools and look at improving classroom teaching and learning.”

As part of a pilot project, the Digital Equaliser Programme would be implemented in 150 schools in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. “Once this picks up, we may extend it to other schools as well,” Mr. Thennarasu said. The Department was also talking to other corporate houses to look at areas such as life skills training for students. J. Sundarakrishnan, director, Operations, Digital Equaliser Programme, AIF, said a total of 20 resource persons would be involved in training teachers. “A State team leader, zonal coordinators and cluster-level coordinators will ensure that teachers of the schools chosen are trained in modern teaching methods.” Weekly training programmes would be organised for teachers to ensure continuity, he added.

School Education Secretary M. Kutralingam and senior officials of the Department were present.
