TUMKUR: Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse farmers from the Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway in front of the Kunigal taluk Agricultural Produce Market Committee office at Kunigal in Tumkur district on Wednesday evening. Farmers have been agitating against shortage of fertilizer supplies since July 14 by blocking traffic on National Highways, 48, 206 and 4, and major State highways. Their agitation on Wednesday spread to hobli and village roads and several district roads. At Tiptur and C.N. Halli towns, farmers forced the people to observe bandh. All shops, hotels, schools and colleges, and even banks were closed for the day. At C.N. Halli, the farmers gathered in front of over 12 Vyvasaya Seva Sahakara Sanghas. They grew angry that the societies did not have stocks. They went around the town and forced the shops to close down. They mounted a blockade across Hosadurga Road. The farmers later proceeded to the C.N. Halli taluk office and locked it up. The people of Tiptur voluntarily observed a bandh on Monday to expressed solidarity with the farmers. But on Wednesday, the farmers, led by Janata Dal (Secular) leader B. Nanjamari, forced the people to observe bandh.
