A moment to cherish for Uthra, Mahalakshmi

CHENNAI: For P. Uthra and M. Mahalakshmi, it was a moment to celebrate with their well wishers.

The Asian Youth chess championship victories in Tehran, Iran recently gave the two city girls a sense of self-belief.

While Uthra, won the under 18 category, Mahalakshmi clinched the gold medal in the under 10 section.

“I owe the win to my parents, my coach Syed Anwar Shazuli. In fact I didn’t expect a gold medal in the championship. It’s a surprise for me. This is my first gold medal in an Asian-level event,” said Uthra.

Mahalakshmi said the main reason for her victory was her confidence.

Uthra and Mahalakshmi are students of Velammal MHSS.

Dhandayuthapani takes a hat-trick

M. Dhandayuthapani’s hat-trick and A. Mohammed Asif’s 123 not out were the highlights of Universal’s 95-run win over Bharathi CC in a fourth division match of the TNCA league here recently.

IV Div. ‘A’: Ashok Leyland 320 in 48 overs (Lokesh 84, Sajukumar 73, Sridhar 43, Sachin four for 85, Sukritraman four for 30) bt Grand Prix 186 in 49.5 overs (Mohanbabu 64, Prashanth 42, Balurajkumar four for 28).

Fox Trotters 80 in 32.3 overs lost to Royapettah 81 for two in 10.1 overs (K. Vinoth Kumar 51).

Appaiah Chettiar 162 in 37.5 overs (G. Panner Selvam 61) bt Vigneswara 155 in 41.4 overs (Rajesh Ramanathan 40).

Universal 266 for eight in 50 overs (A. Mohammed Asif 123 not out, Paneer Selvam 44, R. Mohanakrishnan 44) bt Bharathi 171 in 41.5 overs (C. Marimuthu 45, M. Dhandayuthapani five for 35, including a hat-trick).

Minerva 164 in 47.1 overs (Atish 43) lost to MRC ‘B’ 167 for four in 27.5 overs (Prabhu Dev 57).

20th Century 200 in 36.3 overs (G. Murugan 59, Madan four for 36) bt Prasad 179 in 46.2 overs (V. Prabhu five for 41).
