Christ College is deemed university now
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The city’s Christ College has been granted deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and a notification in this regard was issued on Tuesday.
Confirming this, Augustine Thottakkara, who has been appointed Chancellor, said the decision came in the wake of the recommendations of the University Grants Commission.
Father Thottakkara said that a committee had visited the institutions last year. Thomas C. Mathew has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Informed
“We had convened a meeting of all the teaching and non-teaching staff on Wednesday and formally informed them of the grant of the deemed university status,” said Fr. Thottakkara.
Sources in the college confirmed this. They said that once the Union Ministry granted the deemed university status, the college ceased to be affiliated to any university. Christ College, which was an autonomous college, was in the news recently when it figured in a list by a Bangalore University Syndicate sub-committee which recommended the revoking of autonomous status to six colleges.
Unclear
With the grant of deemed university status, it is unclear if Christ College has to respond to the show-cause notice issued by Bangalore University.
