Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Housing Benoy Viswom said here on Wednesday that the State government will take steps to establish a State- wide network of laboratories offering testing facilities for construction materials and equipment to ensure quality. He was inaugurating a three-day orientation training camp for the technical staff of the Kerala State Nirmithi Kendra (KESNIK). The Minister said efforts were on to improve the functioning of KESNIK and district Nirmithi Kendras and to diversify their activities. He urged Nirmithi Kendras to take up new projects and assess the public acceptance of substitute building materials like manufactured sand. He said the Laurie Baker Research and Training Centre would be encouraged to take up more research work. KESNIK director G. Harikumar presided over the inaugural function. Housing Secretary K. Rama Moorthy, KESNIK Chief Technical Officer K. Nandakumar, camp director V.K. Lakshmanan Nair and project coordinator S. Radhakrishnan were present. Speakers at the training camp spoke on new trends in civil engineering, space planning and housing policy guidelines, among other things.
