NAMAKKAL: Twenty nine primary health centres (PHC) in Namakkal function round-the-clock and extend maternity service, said Deputy Speaker of State Assembly V.P. Duraisamy. Participating at the Valaikappu programme organised under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme here on Wednesday, he said that the number of people approaching PHCs for medical care had increased after the government had upgraded the facilities. In 2007-8, the number of deliveries reported at the PHCs in the district had gone up to 2,491. In the current year, about 400 deliveries were being reported a month in the PHCs. Mr. Duraisamy said that the State Government disbursed Rs. 8.9 crore as financial assistance under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme in the last fiscal year. Over 2,750 women were given Rs. 1.27 crore in the current fiscal year. The district also received Rs. 45.47 lakh under the Janani Suraksha Yojana. About 6,102 women were given financial assistance under this scheme, he added. Mr. Durasamy distributed maternity assistance worth Rs. 4 lakh to 100 women during the function. He also handed over Rs. 35,000 under Janani Suraksha Yojana to 50 beneficiaries. Collector U. Sagayam, Joint Director of Medical and Rural Health Services (in-charge) Udhaysankar, Deputy Director of Health Services Sekar and senior officials were present.
